Decay of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence from power-law initial conditions.
We derive relations for the decay of the kinetic and magnetic energies and the growth of the Taylor and integral scales in unforced, incompressible, homogeneous, and isotropic three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (3DMHD) turbulence with power-law initial energy spectra. We also derive bounds for the decay of the cross and magnetic helicities. We then present results from systematic numerical s...
متن کاملImpact of Hall effect on energy decay in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
[1] We examine numerically the influence of Hall effect corrections to Ohm’s law upon the decay of homogeneous compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence and conclude that there are no significant differences in global decay rate associated with the Hall effect. This affirms expectations that energy decay is controlled by the large-scale eddies.
متن کاملEnergy decay laws in strongly anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence.
We investigate the influence of a uniform magnetic field B(0)=B(0)e( parallel) on energy decay laws in incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. The nonlinear transfer reduction along B(0) is included in a model that distinguishes parallel and perpendicular directions, following a phenomenology of Kraichnan. We predict a slowing down of the energy decay due to anisotropy in the limit...
متن کاملInitial Condition Sensitivity of Global Quantities in Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
In this paper we study the effect of subtle changes in initial conditions on the evolution of global quantities in two-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. We find that a change in the initial phases of complex Fourier modes of the Elsässer variables, while keeping the initial values of total energy, cross helicity and Alfvén ratio unchanged, has a significant effect on the evoluti...
متن کاملKolmogorov’s law for two-dimensional electron-magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
The analogue of the Kolmogorov’s four-fifths law is derived for twodimensional, homogeneous, isotropic EMHD turbulence in the energy cascade inertial range. Direct numerical simulations for the freely decaying case show that this relation holds true for different values of the adimensional electron inertial length scale, de. The energy spectrum is found to be close to the expected Kolmogorov sp...
